The Kyiv Metro has reminded passengers how stations work during an air raid alert. Underground sections keep running, while surface sections are stopped until the all-clear. The stations are both transport and shelter at the same time.
Which stations close
During an alert, the surface stations are temporarily closed: Dnipro, Hidropark, Livoberezhna, Darnytsia, Chernihivska and Lisova. If you travel on these sections, plan alternatives or get off at an underground station.
How to get into the shelter if the station is already closed
If you arrive at a station after the alert has been announced, tell a police officer or a metro duty officer. Near the entrances there are contact phone numbers for police or metro staff, as well as a call button. They will give you access to the shelter.
What not to bring
The metro asks people not to bring large camping tents, inflatable mattresses and other bulky items into the shelter. During massive attacks, thousands of people can be in the metro at once, and extra items take up space others need.
It is better to take:
- water and light food;
- a warm sweater or blanket, because stations are cool;
- a phone charger;
- documents and necessary medicines.
Tips for passengers
- Do not run on escalators or stairs: it is dangerous in a crowd.
- Do not block passages and vestibules; keep them clear for those behind you.
- Help older people, people with children and people with disabilities.
The information is based on a reminder from the metro operator dated 30 July 2026. Before travelling, check the official metro website or the Kyiv city portal: the rules may be updated.
