Eurovision is one of the oldest and most popular television contests in the world. Every year millions of viewers follow the performances and the counting of points.

How it is organised

Participating countries each send one performer and song. The contest takes place in several stages: semi-finals and a final. Some countries reach the final automatically.

How voting works

The result consists of two parts:

  • Votes of national juries, made up of music professionals;
  • Votes of viewers, who vote by phone or in an app.

A country cannot vote for its own performer. Points from the juries and viewers are added up, and the country with the highest total wins.

Ukraine at Eurovision

Ukraine has taken part in and won the contest: in 2004, 2016 and 2022. The 2022 victory became a symbol of support and solidarity for the country.

It is a combination of music, show and international competition. Each country presents itself through an image and a song, and viewers feel a sense of community.

Criticism

The contest is criticised for politicised voting and geographic blocs. The organisers periodically change the rules to make the process fairer.
