An eSIM is a module built into a smartphone that replaces a physical SIM card. The operator transmits the profile with your number and tariff electronically.
How it works
Instead of inserting a plastic card, you scan a QR code or enter data in the settings. The phone downloads the operator’s profile and is ready for use.
Advantages
- No need to go to a shop and wait for a physical card.
- You can have several profiles and switch between them.
- Convenient for travel: you can buy a local tariff online.
- It cannot be physically pulled out of the phone.
Limitations
- Not all devices support it.
- Not all operators offer the service.
- Moving to a new phone requires actions: often you have to activate it again.
How to activate
- Make sure the phone supports eSIM.
- Order an eSIM from the operator: in the app or a shop.
- Scan the QR code in the network settings.
- Confirm the activation.
Security
Intruders sometimes try to reissue a SIM card on someone else’s number. Protect your operator account with a password or PIN and do not give anyone codes.
Before buying a phone, check whether it supports eSIM and whether your operator provides it.
