Losing a phone is not only the loss of a device but also a risk to your money and private data. It is worth acting quickly and by plan.
The first hour
- Call your own number. Perhaps the phone is simply misplaced, and someone has found it.
- Try to locate the device. Use the find-my-device services: “Find My Device” on Android or “Find My” on iPhone. You can lock it and erase the data remotely.
- Block the SIM card. Call the operator. This protects against charges and interception of codes.
- Call your bank. Block your cards and the app.
Within a day
- Change passwords for email, social networks and messengers.
- Sign out of accounts on all devices.
- Report to the police: a report helps if fraudsters use your data.
- Restore your number: ask the operator for a duplicate SIM card.
How to reduce risk in advance
- Set a complex password or biometrics on the screen.
- Turn on two-factor authentication.
- Keep backups.
- Write down the phone’s IMEI: it can be found on the box or by dialling *#06#.
- Do not keep passwords in notes.
Do not delay
The sooner cards and accounts are blocked, the smaller the chance of losses. The tips are general; see the instructions of your operator and bank.
