Kyiv police detained a man who, according to law enforcement, was walking around with a block of TNT in his pocket. Ukrainian media reported this on 16 October, citing the police.

What is known

The incident took place in the capital’s Sviatoshynskyi district. According to the police, a 38-year-old Kyivan was detained. Bomb disposal experts seized the dangerous object. Investigators detained the man under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which defines the grounds for detention without a court order.

Law enforcement notes that the man had previously been repeatedly held criminally liable, including for robberies and drug offences. The course of the investigation and the classification of his actions will be determined by investigators and the court: until a verdict, a person is presumed innocent.

What to do if you find a suspicious object

  1. Do not touch it, move it or try to take it apart.
  2. Move to a safe distance and warn people around.
  3. Call 112 or 102 and give the exact address and a description of the object.
  4. Do not use a mobile phone nearby if rescuers ask you not to, and wait for their instructions.
  5. When bomb disposal experts arrive, follow their orders.

Why this matters

In a country at war, cities can have fragments, munitions and other dangerous objects. Even something that looks like a dummy or rubbish can be dangerous.
