Slow Wi-Fi is annoying. Often the problem is not the tariff or the router but the settings and placement.

1. Place the router correctly

Put it in the centre of the flat, at height, not behind a cupboard or under a table. Walls, especially load-bearing ones, weaken the signal. Keep it away from microwaves and cordless phones.

2. Update the firmware

Manufacturers fix bugs and improve performance. Check for updates in the router’s settings.

3. Choose a free channel

In apartment blocks, dozens of networks work on the same channels and interfere with each other. In the router’s settings you can choose a less crowded channel.

4. Use the 5 GHz band

The 5 GHz band is faster and less congested but has a shorter range. 2.4 GHz is slower but penetrates walls better. Connect nearby devices to 5 GHz.

5. Protect the network

Set a strong password and a modern type of encryption. Then neighbours will not use your internet and slow it down.

6. Add an extender

If the flat is large, use a repeater or a Mesh system.

7. Restart the router

Sometimes a simple restart helps. Do it once every few weeks.

Before buying a new router, check the speed at different distances from it: this will help you understand where the problem is.
